Russia can’t ignore heavy losses in Ukraine much longer — NATO military chief

The Russian army's heavy losses on the front in Ukraine and growing pressure on Russia’s defense industry are gradually weakening its long-term war capabilities

Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone said this in an interview with ArmyInform.

According to him, Ukraine's attacks on military targets in Russia are a legitimate form of self-defense under international law. These attacks undermine Russian logistics, weaken its ability to carry out further attacks, and force Moscow to devote more resources to its own defense.

“While these strikes alone cannot end the war, they are causing significant damage to Russia as they target fuel depots, air bases and ammunition stockpiles.  Russia's growing losses on the battlefield, coupled with increasing pressure on its defense industry, are gradually deteriorating its long-term military capabilities,” Dragone emphasized.

The Chairman of NATO's Military Committee also emphasized that despite heavy losses at the front, Russia continues to fight with the support of North Korea, Iran and China. However, in the long run, it will be difficult for Russia to continue to ignore such a high level of losses.

According to the admiral, continued military support for Ukraine will lead to further deterioration of Russia's military capabilities and put Ukraine in a stronger position during negotiations.

“We must focus on supporting the end of the war to ensure that Ukraine can enter any negotiations from a position of strength,” Dragone emphasized.

  • Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Defense Forces have eliminated over 850,000 Russian soldiers. According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, in January alone, near Pokrovsk in Donetsk region, the Russian army lost 7,000 soldiers, while in the 10 years of the second Chechen war, it lost 6,000.
