If EU has ceiling on sanctions, embargo should be imposed - diplomat Chaly
The EU needs to change its ideology on restrictions for Russia: an embargo is introduced and then exceptions are made on humanitarian issues
Ukrainian diplomat Valeriy Chaly shared his opinions with Espreso TV.
"The phrase about the limit of sanctions in the EU is completely inadequate to the task. The task is to make the aggressor stop. UN sanctions are mostly an embargo, and here there is a gradual transition on certain supplies and goods. If they have a ceiling on sanctions, as they say, let them impose an embargo," he said.
According to the diplomat, this is the American approach - first warning with sanctions, then gradual introduction.
"It was a right call before, but absolutely wrong in this situation. A large-scale war entails an embargo on all goods. The EU probably needs to change its ideology: an embargo is introduced and then exceptions are made for the food group, the medical group - for humanitarian issues," Chaly added.
In his opinion, it is necessary to act as decisively as possible right now.
"I understand that this will not happen tomorrow. If we don't start this discussion now, this European machine will take a long time to set up. I propose to turn the pyramid over to its base - an embargo on oil, gas and other groups of goods. First of all, those that help Russia fight and finance the war. The pressure should be maximized at the outset, as should the supply of weapons. And then there should be exceptions. Now the G7 will discuss the embargo - we'll see what happens at the meeting. But if it happens, the EU can go further, because the G7 includes the largest economies of the European Union," the diplomat summarized.
