IAEA calls on Russia to stop all activity at Ukraine's nuclear facilities
The United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Governing Council has adopted the third resolution since the beginning of a full-scale war in Ukraine, calling on Russia to stop all military operations in the areas of Ukrainian nuclear facilities.
This is reported by Reuters.
Thus, 24 out of 35 IAEA member states voted in favour, 2 voted against, 7 abstained, and 2 were absent.
Canada and Finland proposed the text of the resolution. Diplomats reported that Russia and China voted against the resolution, while Kenya, Namibia, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Vietnam abstained.
"The Council expresses serious concern that Russia has not heeded the Council's calls to immediately cease all actions against and at nuclear facilities in Ukraine and asks Russia to do so immediately," the resolution reads.
IAEA Chairman Rafael Grossi called for a protective zone around the nuclear power plant to stop shelling and reduce the risk of a catastrophic nuclear accident. The resolution states that the board supports Grossi's efforts.
"The Council expresses serious concern over the unacceptable pressure on the Ukrainian operational personnel of Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and their detentions, as well as repeated interruptions in external power supply due to the shelling of the surrounding area," the text adds.
The resolution also notes that no traces of the production of a "dirty bomb" were found in Ukraine.
