How much more of this nonsense do we have to endure? - UN Ambassador on Russian Federation's statements regarding "dirty bomb" and biological weapons
Great Britain believes that Russia is purposefully littering the agenda of the UN Security Council with nonsense, instead of fulfilling its own obligations. And France says that the Russian Federation is spreading lies to hide from its own responsibility
This was stated by the permanent representative of Great Britain to the UN, Barbara Woodward, at a meeting of the Security Council convened by the Russians regarding the "military-biological activities of the United States in Ukraine", reports Ukrinform.
“The Russian Federation has repeatedly spread disinformation, including wild claims involving dirty bombs, chemical weapons and offensive biological research. How much more of this nonsense do we have to endure,” emphasized Woodward.
The British representative recalled that in September at the disarmament conference in the presence of 89 states during the hearings on the implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of Biological and Toxic Weapons in Geneva, Russia made similar accusations.
"Nothing but the distortion of various public documents and copied and pasted images from Wikipedia... The reaction of the vast majority of other participating states was clear: Russia must stop its aggression and disinformation campaign against Ukraine," she said.
All the claims of the Russians were considered and rejected, so "proposals for further investigations would be a waste of the time of the Security Council," Woodward emphasized.
The representative of Great Britain added that there are many issues that need attention, but Russia is cluttering the agenda with conspiracy theories. But instead of trying to smear Ukraine, it should focus on its own obligations, including to the UN, and stop this war.
In turn, the permanent representative of France at the UN Nicolas de Riviere said that Russia spreads lies to hide from its own responsibility.
"And, unfortunately, this is not the first time that Russia spreads lies to hide from its own responsibility," he noted.
Riviere emphasized that it was Russia, not Ukraine, that used chemical weapons and hid it for four years in Syria: "We are very concerned about the possibility that this disinformation campaign could become a prelude to the use of weapons of mass destruction in Ukraine."
According to him, the spread of information by the Russian Federation about Ukraine's alleged preparation for the use of a "dirty bomb" can be used as a reason for escalation.
"We reject any pretext for escalation, whatever it may be on the part of Russia," said the ambassador.
