“European solidarity is more powerful than Russian undermining activity” - Mykhaylo Gonchar on gas situation in EU countries
Mykhaylo Gonchar, President of the Strategy XXI Center for Global Studies, told Spotlight Ukraine whether Ukrainians should expect a gas shortage and whether EU countries managed to free themselves from dependence on Russia
A Ukrainian expert on international energy and security relations believes that although the situation with gas in European countries is good, Ukraine may face a shortage at the end of winter.
“The situation with underground gas storages in EU countries is more than fine. This means the collapse of the Russian idea of a cold winter and the freezing of Europe. The situation in Ukraine is more sensitive. We have a minimum level of gas in underground storage. And I am afraid that at the end of winter, especially in February, we will have a shortage of gas. However, I hope for European solidarity with Ukraine and that it will be possible to attract more gas flows from the EU gas market,” he said.
Mykhaylo Gonchar that Russia is trying to create conditions that would increase the EU's gas dependence, but the solidarity of all member countries is stronger than any Russian undermining activity.
“Russia wants to create conditions when Europe will ask for additional gas supplies. Of course, this is not a new idea. A year ago we had the same situation. There was a lot of Russian propaganda about a very cold winter and stuff like that. But nothing happened. I think the same scenario will be the coming winter. European solidarity is more powerful than Russian undermining activity, from my point of view,” the expert concluded.
