Charles Michel declares need to suspend Russia's membership in UN Security Council
President of the European Council Charles Michel says that it is necessary to develop a mechanism for suspending Russia's membership in the UN Security Council
He told about this in an interview with RTVi.
“I think there is a gap in international law if a permanent member of the UN Security Council, in this case Russia, defiantly violates international law. In my opinion, a mechanism for suspending membership should be established: I am not talking about Russia’s complete expulsion, but at least the suspension of Russia's membership in the Security Council,” Michel said.
According to him, the need to reform the UN has long been due.
“We have clearly seen that before the start of hostilities in Ukraine, the UN security concept was already flawed and had many difficulties in functioning when solving major international problems. So, I am among those who believe that sooner or later, the reform of the UN functioning will be mandatory, for example, to better take into account the balance of the modern world order. We see that the African continent is very little or very badly represented in the UN structures; the same can be said about Latin America. And I think that at some point, there will be a discussion of a deep reform of the UN system,” Michel said.
