Leaders of 40 countries urge Trump to keep support for Ukraine at European Political Community meeting
In Budapest, at the summit of the European Political Community, the leaders of 40 countries called on Donald Trump, who won the U.S. presidential election, to maintain support for Ukraine, avoid trade wars and not violate the world order
Reuters reports.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU should unite, because, as she noted, no European state will be able to cope with future challenges on its own.
“It is in all our interests that the autocrats of this world get a very clear message that there is not the right of might, that the rule of law is important,” von der Leyen said in the context of Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that Europe “must be able to defend itself.”
“We cannot delegate our security to the Americans forever. Our role is not to comment on Trump's election and say if it's a good thing or not. The question is whether we are ready to stand up for the interests of Europeans,” he said.
Reuters notes that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, whose country currently holds the EU presidency, has supported Trump's future presidency and is one of the few allies of the Republican in Europe.
But other leaders at the summit openly expressed their concerns about Trump's presidency.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said he was concerned about the possibility of a trade war.
Also, amid the collapse of the coalition in Germany, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, emphasized that “Europe is not strong without a strong Germany.”
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also spoke at the summit on November 7. He emphasized that making “concessions” with Russia is “suicide for the whole of Europe.”
