Slovak Defense Ministry considers aircraft transfer to Ukrainian Armed Forces a crime
Slovakia’s Ministry of Defense has filed a criminal complaint against Eduard Heger and Jaroslav Nad, accused of illegally donating MiG-29 fighters and parts of the Kub air defense system to Ukraine in March 2023, during the tenure of the interim Heger government
Slovak outlet Denník N reported the information.
State Secretary Ìgor Melicher stated that the complaint alleges sabotage, abuse of authority by a public official, and breach of duty in the management of foreign property. He criticized the Heger cabinet's actions as unconstitutional and in violation of contractual provisions concerning military equipment.
"This decision left our skies unprotected and put citizens at risk," Melicher emphasized.
Melicher also claimed that there was no official legal analysis supporting the transfer of military equipment by the temporarily appointed cabinet. He asserted that the documents provided by former minister Nad did not meet the requirements of an official document properly registered in the ministry's records.
The accusations reflect the deeply divided Slovak political landscape, marked by Prime Minister Fico's allegations that previous administrations targeted his party with criminal investigations during his time in opposition.
Additionally, Slovakia is set to receive F-16 fighters, which were ordered earlier to replace the MiG aircraft.
