Poland won't intercept Russian missiles and drones, won't train military in Ukraine
Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski says that Poland won't shoot down Russian drones and missiles, and won't train Ukrainian soldiers on Ukrainian territory
RMF24 reports.
According to Zalewski, Poland isn't considering any options for assistance that would involve shooting down missiles or drones from Polish territory.
"We are not considering in any format what is one of the Ukrainian expectations, namely the ability to shoot down missiles or drones from Polish territory," he said.
In his opinion, the West's strengthening of Ukraine's air defense should be sufficient and doesn’t require the participation of Polish aviation. He noted that "Ukraine should be able to defend itself," emphasizing that "NATO and the EU are not parties to the war.”
The deputy minister also rejected the idea of training Ukrainian soldiers on Ukrainian territory, arguing that it would be costly, organizationally difficult, and time-consuming. In his opinion, training Ukrainian soldiers in EU countries, as is currently the case, is the most effective.
According to him, on a bilateral basis, some EU countries can train in Ukraine, but, as he emphasized, "Poland is not one of them.”
- On August 29, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the Polish military doesn’t shoot down drones spotted in the country's airspace because allies recommend restraint.
