White House asks Congress to allocate an additional USD 35 million for Ukraine's nuclear security
Joe Biden's administration asked Congress to add USD 35 million to the bill on short-term state funding for assistance to Ukraine in the field of nuclear security.
CNN reports.
The US National Nuclear Security Administration should allocate the funds "for the general efforts of the US to support Ukraine's nuclear readiness, in particular for the purchase and maintenance of additional sensors, data evaluation and analysis, as well as for the provision of the National Guard of Ukraine with means of protection at nuclear power plants."
The reason for the additional financing is the alarming situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The shelling of the object and the territory around it damaged the infrastructure and power lines.
$35 million is only part of the $12.3 billion aid to Ukraine provided for in the bill on temporary budget financing, the bulk of which is aimed at military and economic aid.
Congress must pass the bill by September 30 to avoid a shutdown - a forced suspension of the work of state institutions.
