West should not fear Russia's defeat - Estonian President
Estonian President Alar Karis stressed that Western countries should not be wary of any possible shocks for Russia if the aggressor country loses the war against Ukraine
Alar Karis wrote about this on Twitter.
According to him, the international community needs a long-term strategy. Therefore, he "outlined its possible starting points" at the Halifax International Security Forum in Canada.
Estonia’s President says, the starting point of such a strategy should be that the West does not have a fear of Russia's defeat in the war against Ukraine and, accordingly, fear of possible shocks that will hit the aggressor country.
"Secondly, NATO must implement the decision to move to a modern forward defence posture urgently. Third, we should not leave grey areas in Europe in the form of buffer states as this will lead to more instability," he said.
The president stressed that Russia did not live up to hopes for strengthening democracy in the country neither in the late 80s nor in the early 90s. But, according to him, Russia has nurtured imperialist ambitions that have in no way made the world a safer place.
“President Putin has repeatedly accused the West in particular of unleashing the war in Ukraine and acts in the belief that we are also part of this war. This proves that Russia's strategic goals have not changed in any way. Putin continues to want to dismantle the current Euro-Atlantic security arrangement and restore his hegemony in the Baltic states and over Poland," the president of Estonia stated.
