We have evidence that Russia committed systematic war crimes on all occupied lands of Ukraine
Law enforcement officers have more and more evidence that Russian aggression in Ukraine was accompanied by systematic war crimes committed in every region where Russian forces were deployed.
Beth Van Schaak, US Ambassador for Global Criminal Justice, stated this during a telephone conference on Monday, Ukrinform reported.
"Aggression against Ukraine is a clear violation of UN Charter, and we have more and more evidence that this aggression was accompanied by systematic war crimes committed in every region where Russian forces were deployed", US representative noted.
She noted that this included torture and ill-treatment of both civilians and prisoners of war, as well as attempts to cover up these crimes. Schaak also recalled Russia's creation of a huge filtering infrastructure where, according to previous reports, physical and psychological violence, including arbitrary executions, takes place.
At the same time, according to her, it is about deliberate, indiscriminate and disproportionate shelling of the civilian population and elements of the civilian infrastructure.
"Each individual strike must be evaluated in terms of whether there were military targets nearby, or whether there were purely civilian targets", an administration representative said in response to a question about whether the US considers Russian shelling of civilian targets to be military crimes.
At the same time, she emphasized that there is currently a "permanent pattern of attacks on civilian elements". According to her, Russian attacks take place very far from military targets, which raises the logical question about the military expediency of such actions. She emphasized that these attacks only serve to leave civilians without electricity, heat or water, or to hit transport that takes people out of the war zone.
"Therefore, each individual incident will have to be considered very carefully by prosecutors, but such regularity is deeply disturbing", Shaak emphasized.
