US to upgrade retired M1A1 Abrams tanks
The US military began re-activating several dozen M1A1 Abrams tanks withdrawn from service with the Marine Corps in 2021
This is reported by the Army Recognition defense and security website.
It is noted that M1A1 Abrams tanks were sent from the Sierra Army Depot storage base to the Anniston repair base for further restoration and modernisation. The US Marine Corps had 400 M1A1 Abrams tanks. The last tanks of this model were withdrawn from service as part of the structural reform of the US Marine Corps.
The Americans want to upgrade these tanks to the M1A2 SEP V3 version so that Poland can receive updated vehicles. In July 2022, the Pentagon promised Poland to transfer 116 M1A1 Abrams tanks as compensation for the transfer of almost 250 Soviet T-72 tanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to the Military Balance, by the end of last year, the US armed forces had about 2,500 M1A1 Abrams tanks of various modifications in service and more than 3,700 vehicles of this type in storage.
