US designates Russia as country of particular concern
The US has designated Russia and 12 other countries and 9 organizations as "of particular concern" for engaging in or tolerating particularly serious violations of religious freedom
This was announced by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in a report on freedom of religion in the world.
“Around the world, governments and non-state actors harass, threaten, jail, and even kill individuals on account of their beliefs. In some instances, they stifle individuals’ freedom of religion or belief to exploit opportunities for political gain. These actions sow division, undermine economic security, and threaten political stability and peace. The United States will not stand by in the face of these abuses,” Blinken declared.
Thus, the US has recognized 12 countries and 9 organizations as those "of particular concern". Among them is Russia and the Russian private military company Wagner.
Also, under the United States International Religious Freedom Act of 1998, China, North Korea, Iran, and Myanmar are on the list. States and organizations have “engaged in or tolerated particularly severe violations of religious freedom.”
“We will continue to carefully monitor the status of freedom of religion or belief in every country around the world and advocate for those facing religious persecution or discrimination,” Blinken said.
- American senators Roger Wicker and Benjamin Cardin presented a bipartisan bill on Thursday, December 1. The bill demands that the US Secretary of State recognize Wagner PMC as a foreign terrorist organization.
