UN to join investigation into Russia's terrorist attack on Olenivka
The UN plans to launch a fact-finding mission to look into the Russian terrorist attack on the prison in Olenivka
This was announced by UN Secretary General António Guterres.
"We receive requests from the Russian Federation and requests from Ukraine to conduct an investigation into the events (in Olenivka - Ed.). I have decided, in accordance with my competence and authority, to launch a fact-finding mission. I do not have the authority to conduct criminal investigations, but I can launch a fact-finding mission", Guterres said.
The UN Secretary General promised that the established facts will be handed over to the governments of Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
"I hope we can agree on the terms of reference for this mission. We are looking for competent and independent people... And we hope to have every opportunity on both sides to access all the data necessary to find out the truth about what happened. This is an issue we have taken very seriously. And we are working hard on it", he said.
