Ukraine, US, Japan and Korea to develop small modular reactors
Energoatom and the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety will join the public-private consortium for the development of small modular reactors.
Ukraine Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko made the announcement on Facebook.
"Even during the wartime, we do not stop designing the new energy future for Ukraine. Carbon-free energy is one of the main focuses on global technological development. Of course, Ukraine, with our experience and potential in nuclear energy, will also take part in the implementation of the world agenda ", Herman Halushchenko wrote on his page.
Ukraine has partnered with the USA, Japan and the Republic of Korea for the public-private consortium for scientific and practical developments in the field of small modular reactors. The project implementation period is expected to last 2-3 years. Both leading nuclear industry companies and research institutions will participate.
NuScale, FuelCell Energy, Clark Seed, Argone National Laboratory will be par of the project from the US side, and State Enterprise National Nuclear Energy Generating Company Energoatom and the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety from the Ukrainian side. In addition, Korean companies Doosan Energy, IHI Corporation, JGC Corporation, Samsung C&T, Starfire Energy will participate.
The project should assess and demonstrate technical capability, economic competitiveness, and the possibility of producing and using hydrogen and ammonia on an industrial scale using small modular reactors to obtain clean, carbon-free energy. For this purpose, it is planned to create a pilot plant and carry out technical and economic analysis of its operation.
"Following Ukraine’s victory, the groundwork of the international public-private consortium, among other sources, will be used to build the new energy system for Ukraine and accelerate our "green transition". This project will be a continuation of our partnership with the USA in the field of technologies for small modular reactors and confirm Ukraine's capability of taking place among the global innovative leaders in the field of clean, carbon-free energy," Herman Halushchenko added.
