The biggest challenge for sappers since Second World War: the US State Department on demining Ukraine
Representative of the US State Department, manager of European affairs, Michael Tierre, said that more than 160,000 square kilometers of the territory of Ukraine must be checked for the presence of mines
He announced this during a briefing of the Helsinki Commission of the US Congress, "Voice of America" quotes.
Tierre noted that Russian troops use the same tactics in Ukraine as ISIS terrorists in Syria and Iraq: they mine civilian houses, children's toys, and even the bodies of the dead.
"Horrific use of explosive devices by the Russian military is reminiscent of tactics of ISIS militants in Iraq and Syria, where terrorists tried to kill as many civilians as possible so that people would be afraid to return to their homes," he emphasized.
For sappers, according to him, demining Ukraine will be the biggest challenge since Second World War. Currently, there are not enough teams for this, so the US plans to provide additional equipment and increase assistance with the training of sappers. In particular, the State Department has already allocated 91.5 million dollars to help Ukraine with demining. These funds are used to train sappers, provide special equipment, and ensure the work of demining teams.
