Stoltenberg says Putin tries to use winter as a weapon, but will not succeed
NATO should step up its support for Ukraine to give Putin no chance of bringing the country to its knees over the winter.
Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of the Alliance, made the statements in an interview to the Welt.
The Welt writes that president Putin reacts to defeats “with more brutality”. With the onset of winter, Moscow began bombing Ukraine's energy supply to bring the country to its knees.
“Putin is trying to use winter as a weapon. But he will not be successful with it,” said Stoltenberg.
The NATO Secretary General noted that the more military successes Ukraine gains, the stronger its position will be in future negotiations.
“We can strengthen Ukraine's position at the negotiating table if we provide military support to the country. The best way to support peace is to support Ukraine,” he emphasized.
The Secretary General added that all allies should maintain and increase their support for Ukraine. This would help Ukrainians uphold their right to self-defense.
