Small modular reactor to be built in Ukraine with US assistance
With US support, Ukraine will demonstrate innovative leadership in the field of clean energy due to the use of advanced technologies.
This was reported by the US State Department.
As part of the UN Climate Conference (SOR27), Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and Ukraine Minister of Energy German Halushchenko announced a Ukraine Clean Fuels from SMRs Pilot project. We are talking about the construction of a safe small modular reactor in Ukraine. The project is aimed at carrying out the first pilot production of industrial production of clean fuel from MMR using the electrolysis of solid oxides.
According to the US State Department, the project is aimed at supporting Ukraine's energy security goals, enabling the decarbonization of hard-to-reach energy sectors through the production of pure hydrogen, and improving long-term food security with the help of clean fertilizers produced from ammonia. In addition, it aims to demonstrate Ukraine's innovative leadership in the field of clean energy through the use of advanced technologies.
Also, John Kerry launched a new Project Phoenix initiative, designed to accelerate the transition of coal-fired power plants to MMR in Europe, preserving local jobs by retraining the workforce. It is about supporting the goals of energy security for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
