Russia's UN Security Council membership should be suspended, - Charles Michel, head of the European Council
Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, calls to suspend Russia's membership in the Security Council of the United Nations, to deprive it of its right of veto, and at the same time to reform the UN.
He stated this while speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, "European Pravda" reports.
"When a permanent member of the Security Council starts an unprovoked and unjustified war, a war that is condemned by the General Assembly, the suspension of that member's membership in the Security Council should, in my view, be automatic," Michel said.
"The use of the right of veto should be an exception, but it has become, as we see, the rule. The reform is necessary and urgent," he emphasized.
Additional information: the Security Council is the most influential body of the UN, as its resolutions are binding on member states. According to the UN Charter, the Security Council bears "primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security." The Security Council includes five permanent members: China, the United States, France, Great Britain and Russia. They have the right to veto all resolutions.
