Russia attacks Ukraine with Shaheds, missiles: homes, power facilities hit in Konotop, casualties reported

Several hits in Konotop city center, Sumy region: casualties reported

This was reported by the mayor of Konotop, Artem Semenikhin.

Around midnight, Semenikhin reported that there were several strikes in Konotop, causing damage to infrastructure. The city was left without electricity.

Later he added that Russia struck a residential area in the city center. There are victims, fires have broken out. Due to a shortage of fire brigades, rescuers had to bring in fire trucks from other cities.

“We are launching backup power sources to supply the grid with water, as there is not enough water to extinguish the fire,” Semenikhin added.

As of 1:10 a.m., a headquarters for the elimination of the consequences of the Russian attack was operating in Konotop. The city has also started to operate the Points of Invincibility (designated locations set up to provide critical services during emergencies). According to Semenikhin, the situation with the power supply is very difficult. 

At 2:10 a.m., the mayor of Konotop said that two people were hospitalized: one of the victims is in a critical condition in a coma. The exact number of wounded is not yet known.

“We have also organized the transportation of people whose homes were damaged to temporary accommodations,” Semenikhin said.

He added that water supply has been temporarily restored in the city, but citizens were urged to stock up on water, as the supply will be stopped for some time in the morning.

In addition, Russian troops destroyed a tram line in the city center of Konotop.

Later, the mayor of Konotop said that the city is facing a critical situation with electricity supply, as the energy infrastructure was severely damaged by the Russian attack. It is currently unclear when power will be restored to homes, but power engineers are prioritizing the restoration of electricity to hospitals and the water utility.

In addition, the drone strike damaged a large number of educational institutions and hospital buildings. In particular, windows and doors were smashed. The exact number of damaged institutions is unknown. 

“All surgeons in the city are at work. We continue to receive appeals from the victims. Two men are currently hospitalized. One of them is in a very critical condition (coma),” the mayor said.

He added that the man who is in a coma was injured when he was on his way to rescue people. 

According to the Military Administration, as of the morning, 13 people were injured with varying degrees of severity.

Later, the Sumy Regional Prosecutor's Office reported that the number of victims of the massive drone attack on critical and civilian infrastructure in Konotop had increased to 14.

“As of 8 a.m., 14 civilians have sought medical assistance, 7 apartment buildings, 1 private house, a medical and educational institution, 3 cars, a garage cooperative, a shop, and a banking institution have been damaged. Prosecutors, in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, are documenting the consequences of the attacks,” the agency said.

Oleh Strilka, spokesman for the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service in Sumy region, Lieutenant Colonel of the Civil Defense Service, told Espreso that it was the most massive attack with Shahed drones on the Konotop district.

“According to the military administration, a total of 10 explosions were recorded. There were hits on the residential sector, infrastructure, medical facilities, and other buildings and premises were also damaged. Rescuers were right next to the residents of Konotop, they had to work simultaneously at several locations because there was a lot of damage,” said Strilka.

According to him, the balcony of a 5-storey apartment building was on fire, windows were smashed, a vehicle was burning nearby, and 7 other cars were damaged. In the 4-storey apartment building, the fire was between the second and third floors. In addition, infrastructure facilities were on fire.

“The fires at all these facilities were extinguished by morning. Rescuers are still working to eliminate the consequences of the strikes last night. Thank God, there were no fatalities, however 14 people were injured, including one child,” Strilka added.

Attack on Kyiv region

Ruslan Kravchenko, the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, reported that Russia attacked the Kyiv region with drones during the night and morning, and noted that air defense forces were active in the region.

“There are no casualties. There were no hits to residential or critical infrastructure. There was no information on damage caused by falling debris from downed enemy targets,” Kravchenko said.

According to him, a fire in a field and a grass fire in an open area have been extinguished in two districts. Currently, operational services continue their work.

At 2:42 a.m., Russia's drones were spotted in the Kyiv region, the Kyiv Regional Military Administration informed. 

“Air defense forces are working on targets. Stay in shelters until the end of the air raid. Take care of your own safety,” the statement said.

The Kyiv City Military Administration said that no drones entered the airspace of the capital.

“Air defense forces and means shot down everything on the outskirts! According to the operational report, there are no casualties or damage in Kyiv,” the statement said. 

Air defense operation in Poltava region

At 12:16 a.m., Suspilne Poltava informed that air defense forces were operating in the Poltava community. 

Explosions in Khmelnytskyi region

At 3:20 a.m., Suspilne reported the sounds of explosions in the Khmelnytskyi region. Less than 15 minutes later, the explosions were heard again. 

At 4:09 a.m., explosions were heard again in the Khmelnytskyi region. 

In the morning, the head of the Regional Military Administration, Serhiy Tyurin, said that air defense forces had destroyed 10 drones. 

“At the same time, a fire broke out in one of the warehouses storing furniture products. A unit of the State Emergency Service is working to eliminate the fire,” he wrote.

At 10:13 a.m., Suspilne reported explosions in Khmelnytskyi region. At 11:42 a.m., the journalists reported repeated explosions.
