Canada allocates $15 million to return Ukrainian children from Russia
Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau announced the allocation of $15 million in extra funding to bring back Ukrainian children who were taken illegally to Russia
He made the announcement during his speech at the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland on June 16.
Trudeau noted that this weekend, most countries celebrate Father's Day, pointing out that in Ukraine, not every father can be with their children to celebrate.
"We've recently seen reports of Ukrainian children being listed on Russian adoption websites. They're being forced to forget their identity as Ukrainians. I think we all know the consequence of removing children from their language, their culture, their families, their identity. It's a form of colonialism that the world cannot abide by," he stressed.
The Prime Minister of Canada noted that on June 16 he co-chaired a group on the return of Ukrainian children to their families, following which Canada decided to allocate $15 million in additional funding for the return of Ukrainian children illegally taken to Russia. He also mentioned that the funding would support survivors of war crimes.
Trudeau called on the international community to show strong solidarity with Ukraine and stressed the need to uphold humanitarian law and the UN Charter.
"As a dad I hope that we can all get to a just and sustain stainable peace in the next year so that Ukrainian kids and families can celebrate Father's Day together," Trudeau concluded.
