Ukraine has right to project force on Russian territory - Britain at UN
The UN Charter states that Ukraine has the right to self-defense against Russian attacks. This doesn't deprive it of the right to project force on the territory of the Russian Federation
Fergus Eckersley, Political Coordinator of the Permanent Mission of the United Kingdom to the United Nations, said this during a meeting of the UN Security Council, Ukrinform reports.
“Direct attacks on civilian infrastructure constitute a war crime. Ukraine has a right to defend itself, under Article 51 of the UN Charter, against Russia’s attacks. This does not preclude its right to project force into Russian territory, so long as action complies with international law,” Eckersley said.
He believes that Russia cannot intensify the war from its own territory by increasing attacks on civilians while expecting Ukraine not to try to eliminate the source of the threat.
“We will continue to provide Ukraine with the capabilities it needs to defend its people,” the diplomat said.
Eckersley emphasized that neither the United Kingdom nor its partners seek direct confrontation with Russia or a broader escalation.
“Russian disinformation and threats and false accusations will not deter the UK or our allies from our steadfast support for Ukraine,” he concluded.
