Over 14,000 Ukrainian civilians imprisoned by Russia - human rights activists
The Russian Federation holds more than 14,000 Ukrainian civilians in prisons. Human rights activists call the abduction and capture of civilians one of the most acute problems of the war
This was stated by the International Society for Human Rights, DW reports.
Human rights activists noted that prisoners who managed to return to Ukraine have serious injuries, including broken bones and concussions. They also report experiences of physical, sexual, and psychological violence.
For example, Olena Yahupova, who was imprisoned in Russia after being taken from the occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region, said she was raped and tortured in the camp, calling it hell. The Ukrainian woman urged the international community to seek the release of Ukrainian civilians from detention in Russia and stressed that "thousands of people" need to be saved.
Oleksandr Tarasov from Kherson also spoke about his imprisonment in Russia. He was held in a Russian prison for a year and tortured with a stun gun.
The International Society for Human Rights noted that their human rights defenders are currently trying to secure the release of more than 60 people from Russia.
- The figure of 14,000 civilian prisoners was also announced in July by the Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets.
