Russia has committed over 4,700 environmental crimes against Ukraine, causing $64 billion in damages
During a working visit to Azerbaijan, Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets stated at the International Baku Forum of Ombudsmen on Climate Change and Human Rights that Russia has caused $64 billion in damage to Ukraine's environment
Lubinets shared this information on his Telegram account, stating, "I mentioned that Russia has committed more than 4,700 environmental crimes in Ukraine, causing $64 billion in damage. This has resulted in soil, water, and air pollution and harmed Ukraine's nature reserve fund."
He also noted that the forum participants discussed the environmental impact of mining during their discussions.
Lubinets highlighted the devastating impact of Russia's armed aggression on Ukraine, stating, "As a result of Russian armed aggression, Ukraine is the most mined country in the world. According to the UN, this endangers the lives and health of more than 6 million people. Since February 24, 2022, 309 people have died as a result of mines and explosives."
He noted that approximately 142,000 square kilometers are considered potentially mined in Ukraine.
"For comparison, after the war in Croatia, 13,000 square kilometers were considered potentially mined. Since 1996, the demining process in that territory has not yet been completed!" Lubinets emphasized.
Lubinets added that there are currently 2,149 mine action operators involved in demining efforts, and Ukraine's greatest need in this regard is to provide specialists with adequate equipment and supplies.
He also underscored the broader environmental impact of the ongoing war, stating, "The longer the occupiers remain in Ukraine, the faster the climate of the entire planet will change, because wars cause irreparable damage to the environment."
- Earlier, during a meeting of the International Working Group on the Environmental Consequences of War, the head of Ukraine's Presidential Office, Andriy Yermak, said that Ukraine would demand compensation from Russia for environmental damage.
