Ukraine urges Georgian government to stop scaring protesters with ‘mythical Ukrainian scenario’
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has stated that it strongly condemns the ongoing human rights violations and the use of force against peaceful protesters in Georgia
This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
‘We strongly reject the persistent attempts of the Georgian authorities to involve Ukraine in internal political processes in their country. The Georgian government should stop intimidating its people with the myth of so-called “Ukrainian scenario”, while simultaneously implementing a “Belarusian scenario” in practice’ the statement said.
It is emphasized that Ukraine has been and remains committed to democratic transformation in Georgia and its further European and Euro-Atlantic integration, which is in the interests of the Georgian people.
The MFA also expressed its solidarity with Georgian diplomatic colleagues who publicly opposed the Georgian government's decision to withdraw from the EU accession negotiations.
How a new revolution is unfolding in Georgia
On October 26, 2024, regular parliamentary elections were held in Georgia. According to the official decision of the Central Election Commission, the Russian-oriented ruling party Georgian Dream allegedly won the elections. Members of the party voted to hold the so-called presidential election on December 14. In this case, the inauguration of the newly elected president will take place on December 29, meaning that Georgia may already enter the new year of 2025 with a new president.
Opposition parties, President Salome Zurabishvili, and Western countries did not recognize the election results in favor of Georgian Dream.
Nevertheless, the party has already nominated former footballer Mikheil Kavelashvili, who has no university degree and can use foul language in public, for the position of No. 1 in Georgia. Political analysts call the athlete Bidzina Ivanishvili's ‘hand-picked’ candidate.
At the same time, on November 28, the Georgian Dream party announced the abandonment of its political course to join the European Union, and state propagandists are speaking in the media about the need to return to the study of the Russian language and culture.
All of this is accompanied by continuous street protests, which are brutally suppressed by police riot police, but are organized again and again in the largest cities. The Georgian opposition has been most active on the streets for the past four days and four nights, since November 28.
Observers say that there is a real threat of Georgia slipping into a Belarusian-style pro-Russian dictatorship.
On the night of December 2, large-scale protests continued in the Georgian capital and other cities, triggered by the government's announcement that it would suspend the process of European integration until 2028.
