Defense Express explains what presidential drawdown authority is, allowing US to send aid to Ukraine
Military expert, editor-in-chief of Defense Express, Oleh Katkov, noted that presidential drawdown authority (PDA) is a procedure according to which weapons in the US Department of Defense's stockpiles are transferred to the Armed Forces of Ukraine
He said this on the Espreso TV channel.
"After signing the bill, Biden has to announce the presidential drawdown authority, and this is an extremely important aspect. Because, in addition to voting, where the key is that the money is allocated, then this money needs to be put into action. Therefore, as soon as Biden signs the bill, which becomes law, the funds appear. And Biden signs the presidential drawdown authority with a list of weapons that should be transferred from the US Defense Ministry's stockpiles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine," Katkov explained.
According to the military expert, presidential drawdown authority is a procedure according to which weapons in the stockpiles of the US Department of Defense are transferred to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
"Usually, the timeframe for delivering weapons to Ukraine was minimal, measured in days. In the case of the aid to Ukraine, a lot of things were done before it became public knowledge. Some preparations were made in advance. Most likely, it has long been agreed what exactly will be transferred in the first package," Katkov added.
- On Saturday, April 20, 2024, the US House of Representatives held a historic vote to approve a $95 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.
- Members of the US House of Representatives, Democrat Bill Keating and Republican Thomas Cain, said that the transfer of new military aid to Ukraine under the approved package would reach Kyiv "sooner than expected".
