Zelenskyy responds to Polish presidential candidate opposing Ukraine’s EU, NATO membership
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fired back at Polish presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki, who said Ukraine doesn’t belong in the EU or NATO. Zelenskyy warned that such a stance could force Poles to “take up arms to defend their country.” Poland’s opposition party, Law and Justice (PiS), accused Zelenskyy of interfering with their election
This is reported by Onet.
“Ukraine’s president should focus on his country’s affairs, and we will choose our own president. He has the right—and even the obligation—to advocate for his country’s interests, but it is up to us to decide who the candidates are and what their positions are on fundamental issues,” said former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
PiS politicians were angered by Zelenskyy’s reaction to Nawrocki’s statement. Nawrocki, supported by the party, had declared that Ukraine should not be invited to the EU or NATO until the Volyn issue is resolved.
“If Ukraine is not in the EU, not in NATO, and has no security guarantees, then Mr. Nawrocki should start training now because he may find himself taking up arms with his compatriots to defend his country,” Zelenskyy told Polish media, according to European Pravda.
The Ukrainian president emphasized that if Ukraine were to lose the war, the risk of conflict spreading to Poland would be “very high.”
“Russia would then find itself on Poland’s border immediately after Ukraine, and Mr. Nawrocki would no longer be engaged in political battles but fighting for his life,” Zelenskyy added.
Onet noted that PiS politicians accused Zelenskyy of allegedly interfering in Poland’s electoral process by “endorsing” the opposing candidate, Rafal Trzaskowski.
- Last week, Karol Nawrocki, the presidential candidate from Poland’s opposition Law and Justice party, stated that Ukraine should not be part of the EU or NATO until the Volyn tragedy issue is resolved.
