China uses horrific war in Ukraine to its advantage - Diplomat Bryza
Former US State Department advisor Matthew Bryza believes that China is trying to increase its influence in the Middle East while the US and Europe are focused on the war in Ukraine
He expressed this opinion on Espreso TV.
“China's position will remain as it has been. Remember that when it issued its so-called peace plan for Ukraine, the first point was to maintain and restore Ukraine's territorial integrity, which Russia very much disliked. We also know that subsequently, China and Xi Jinping reportedly warned President Putin to stop threatening to use nuclear weapons, stating that China was staunchly opposed to Russia doing so. China, by the way, has looked at Ukraine as an important trading partner for years.
However, as I said, the underlying interests of China in terms of security are to undermine the US's leadership and the so-called rules-based international order that the United States helped create,” Bryza explained.
According to the diplomat, China is using the war in Ukraine to strengthen its positions in the Middle East.
“So, China will be opposed to the US's strong push with its European allies for Ukraine's victory in its war with Russia. China will be very happy to keep the US and its European allies occupied with the terrible war in Ukraine while it strengthens its geopolitical positions in the Middle East, especially with regard to Saudi Arabia, and in Central Asia,” he added.
