Russia blows up Kakhovka dam earlier than they planned

Valery Kondratyuk, who served as the Head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine from 2020 to 2021, believes that Russia had planned to detonate the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant's (HPP) dam during the Ukrainian counteroffensive

He stated this on Espreso.

“When the Russians prepare for certain actions, they already have pre-planned narratives. The fact that there was a pause in the Russian media regarding the dam explosion indicates that it occurred earlier than scheduled. The dam was intended to be blown up when the Ukrainian counteroffensive started, causing the units of the Armed Forces crossing the Dnipro River to be washed away. However, unforeseen circumstances led to the explosion happening earlier. There is information suggesting that Russian engineering units may have been involved and that there may be victims among them. Details about the individuals responsible for the detonation or present at the Kakhovka HPP at that time will likely emerge soon,” he explained.

Kondratyuk also mentioned that Russia's military doctrine includes the deliberate provocation of large-scale man-made disasters.

“Putin, unable to use nuclear weapons, sees a man-made catastrophe as a "mini nuclear weapon" that he can employ. Putin's intention is not to take over Ukraine but to create a weakened and damaged state. The undermining of the Kakhovka HPP is a significant red line that requires a specific response or security guarantees from the West,” according to Kondratyuk.

  • On June 6, the Russian occupying forces destroyed the Kakhovka Hydro Power Plant (HPP) through an explosion, resulting in complete destruction. This led to the flooding of settlements in the Kherson region, including the regional center itself. The flooding also affected the Mykolaiv region, and the water level rose in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions. Consequently, there has been a large-scale die-off of fish in the Dnipropetrovsk region. You can find more detailed information about the events here, as well as additional news regarding the HPP blow-up.
