THAAD air defenses and F-18s: What other weapons does Ukraine request from U.S.?
Ukraine's latest list of U.S. weapons needed to fight the Russian military includes sophisticated air defense systems, F-18 fighter jets, drones and helicopters
Reuters reports this.
As reported by Reuters, officials from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense disclosed a "list of armaments to meet the needs of defense forces of Ukraine" during a private session at a conference in Washington attended by government officials and leaders from the defense industry. The extensive list encompassed existing weapons in Ukraine's possession, such as Abrams tanks and 155-millimeter artillery, along with requested items like F-16s, drones, and long-range ATACMS missiles. Notable entries on the list included high-value assets like Boeing's C-17 Globemaster transport jets and Lockheed Martin's C-130 Super Hercules. Additionally, Boeing's Apache attack helicopters and Lockheed Martin's Sikorsky unit's Black Hawk helicopter were included.
The documents revealed Ukraine's interest in acquiring F-18 "Hornet" fighter jets, various drones from General Atomics, including the MQ-9B Sky Guardian, and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) air defense system by Lockheed.
According to Reuters, Ukrainians are aware of the necessity to secure military assistance from Western nations to continue their fight. However, proposed legislation in the U.S. Senate, which would allocate billions of dollars in new security aid for Ukraine and Israel, faced obstacles as Republicans insisted on stricter measures for border control with Mexico.
“U.S. President Joe Biden has made a Ukrainian victory a foreign-policy goal as he campaigns for re-election in November 2024. Ukraine's list reflects what would easily be billions of dollars' worth of purchases or donations of weapons,” Reuters writes.
