People ask for water and bread: volunteer describes situation flooded left bank in Kherson region
Oleksandr Kastornov managed to evacuate his family from the left bank of the Dnipro River
He shared this on Espreso.
Oleksandr Kastornov shared, "The military allowed me to leave on a boat with company workers on a tugboat."
“When I went on the water, I made a voluntary decision to pick up my parents from the country cooperative. It's located between the villages of Kardashinka and Kokhany. I traveled there by boat. The river had flooded a lot. I moved slowly to the cottage cooperative and looked at everything between the roofs. It was horrifying to see everything submerged, but what was even worse was knowing that people were trapped under those roofs, reaching out through small windows. They shouted, asking for water and pleading to be taken away. They felt abandoned, saying there was no one there to bring them bread. Today, people called me after finding my phone number somewhere, saying, "Come, we know you were here."
According to Oleksandr, the road was not under fire during his journey, but rockets flew almost directly above.
“There was a fire visible somewhere from the Crimean side, along with explosions. However, it was quiet where I passed. Only dogs, cats, roosters were making noise, and people were sitting on boards or rooftops of houses.”
The events leading up to this involved the Russian occupying forces blowing up the Kakhovka HPP on June 6
The power plant was completely destroyed, causing flooding in populated areas of the Kherson region, the regional center itself, and villages and cities in the Mykolaiv region. The water level also rose in the Dnipropetrovsk region, leading to a widespread fish die-off.
More details about the incident can be found here.
The Ukrainian authorities have evacuated over three thousand affected residents from the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions since the evening of Saturday, June 10, 2023.
