Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada approves ratification of Rome Statute
On Wednesday, August 21, the Ukrainian Parliament ratified the Rome Statute, the foundation of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak shared the news.
A total of 281 MPs voted in favor of the decision.
Zheleznyak mentioned that before the vote, MPs received letters of support from the General Staff and the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, Kyrylo Budanov.
"There was a tough discussion during the review. Many speeches were delivered both for and against," he added.
Ukrainian forces strike S-300 air defense system in Russia's Rostov region overnight
On the night of August 21, the Ukrainian military struck a position of the S-300 anti-aircraft missile system near the village of Novoshakhtinsk, Rostov region, Russia.
This was reported by the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Units of the Ukrainian Navy in cooperation with other units of the Defence Forces took part in the attack. The military struck at the position of the S-300 anti-aircraft missile system in Rostov region.
"According to the results of objective control, explosions were observed at the designated targeting points. The accuracy of the strike is being investigated," the statement said.
According to the General Staff, Russian forces use S-300 systems, in particular, to strike at peaceful cities of Ukraine, destroying residential buildings and terrorising the civilian population.
Moscow mayor reports major drone strike on Russia’s capital
In the early hours of August 21, Moscow faced what is reported as one of the most significant drone attacks on the region. Russia claims to have intercepted 10 drones in the assault.
Russian state agency TASS confirmed the incident.
At 3 a.m., Moscow’s Mayor, Sergey Sobyanin, was the first to announce that Russian air defenses in the Podolsky district allegedly thwarted a drone headed toward the city.
By 4:33 a.m., according to Sobyanin, Moscow’s air defenses had reportedly shot down the eighth drone.
Subsequently, Russian authorities reported the downing of two more drones.
Sobyanin remarked, “Air defense forces shot down 10 UAVs that were flying towards Moscow at night. This is one of the largest attempts to attack the capital.”
Ukrainian forces show destruction of Russian targets in Kursk region
Operators from the Special Operations Forces, along with units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, have released a video showcasing strikes on Russian military targets in the Kursk region.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces reported this.
The video shows the effective destruction of Russian engineering equipment in the Kursk region by Ukraine's Special Operations Forces, as well as the detection and adjustment of HIMARS fire targeting bridges and pontoon crossings.
Additionally, the Special Operations Forces, in collaboration with the Defense Forces, struck and destroyed various enemy assets, including military equipment, supplies, fuel and lubricants, an electronic warfare system, and a 152-mm D-20 cannon.
Ukraine receives over $5 billion in aid from Canada since Russia's invasion
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, Canada has provided over $5 billion in direct budget support to Ukraine.
Ukraine's Ministry of Economy press service reports.
On August 21, Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko met with Canadian International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen.
Marchenko expressed gratitude to the Canadian government for its support since the beginning of the full-scale war. According to him, Canada is the third largest G7 member country in terms of funding.
“Canada continues to maintain its clear position on financial, military, humanitarian aid, sanctions against the aggressor country, as well as in the G7 political decision to use the immobilized sovereign assets of the Russian Federation in favor of Ukraine,” the Ukrainian minister said.
Thus, in 2022, Ukraine received about $1.9 billion from Canada, in 2023 - more than $1.75 billion in concessional funds, and this year the state budget received more than $1.47 billion.
