Suspect in Farion's murder detained in Dnipro
A suspect in the murder of former far-right MP and linguist Iryna Farion was detained in the city of Dnipro. He is an 18-year-old man
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this.
"The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko has just reported to me on the detention of a suspect in the murder of Iryna Farion in Dnipro," he wrote.
According to the President, the detention operation was very difficult.
"During these days, hundreds of specialists from the National Police of Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine and other services have been working to solve the murder," Zelenskyy wrote and thanked everyone who helped to create a holistic picture of the crime.
"An 18-year-old boy has been detained. The necessary investigative actions and examinations are underway," the president said.
"I have instructed the Minister of Internal Affairs to present all the details to the public," he added.
In his turn, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko provided details of the suspect's detention.
"There is enough evidence to state that it was the detainee who shot at the linguist. 139 hours of continuous work by a huge team of operatives, investigators, criminal analysts, experts, other police services, and employees of the Security Service of Ukraine. We checked every corner of the shooter's escape route and searched about 100 hectares of forest. Eventually, the suspect was tracked down. We identified him. With his photo, it was a matter of time: smart video surveillance cameras caught him everywhere," the minister wrote.
According to him, the detained young man is a resident of Dnipro. In preparation for the crime, he rented at least three apartments in Lviv. The investigation is ongoing.
"Currently, the investigation is inclined to believe that the shooter is only the executor," Klymenko said.
Note: Under Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and shall not be subjected to criminal punishment until his or her guilt is proved in accordance with the law and established by a court verdict of guilty.
Murder of former Ukrainian lawmaker and linguist Iryna Farion

On July 19, at about 19:30, an unknown assailant shot Iryna Farion in Lviv. The Lviv regional police confirmed this and reported that a special police operation was underway to detain him.

Iryna Farion was taken to St. Panteleimon Hospital of the First Territorial Medical Association of Lviv. The woman was in critical condition, late in the evening of July 19, doctors reported that she was in a brain coma and on artificial lung ventilation. Doctors fought for her life to the last.

On Espreso, Lviv City Council member Andirian Hutnyk provided details of the attempted assassination of Iryna Farion. He said that an unknown young man of 20-25 years old "was wearing some kind of hat". He fired a shot at her head with a firearm, the bullet hit her temple, the shot was from a gun without a silencer.

Subsequently, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said that the attack on Iryna Farion was classified as an attempted murder. The Prosecutor General's Office noted that a pre-trial investigation had been launched.

He said that all the necessary forces of the National Police of Ukraine and the Security Service of Ukraine are involved to establish the circumstances of this crime. "Obviously, any violence deserves only condemnation and everyone who is guilty of this attack must be held fully accountable," Zelenskyy wrote.
