Russian attacks in May result in highest civilian casualties in Ukraine in a year - UN
A report by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine shows that at least 436 Ukrainian civilians were killed by Russia in the spring, the most in the last year
The report, which covers the period from March 1 to May 31, will be presented at the Human Rights Council on July 9, Ukrinform reports.
The document highlights the consequences of the war and emphasizes the impact on human rights of Russia's large-scale attacks on critical energy infrastructure and the offensive in the Kharkiv region.
"With May having the highest monthly number of civilian casualties in nearly a year, fighting this spring took a horrific toll on civilians, particularly in Kharkiv region and city," said Chief Monitor Danielle Bell.
According to her, the attacks resulted in the deaths of people, displacement of people, and destruction of buildings and businesses.
According to the report, at least 436 Ukrainian civilians were killed during the spring, and another 1,760 were injured.
UN observers have recorded the use of powerful bombs and missiles by the Russian forces, as well as at least five cases of consecutive attacks on the same location after the rescuers arrived there.
Russian troops launched the largest campaign of attacks on critical energy infrastructure in the spring, leaving millions of people across Ukraine without electricity.
According to Bell, Russian attacks have affected water supply, mobile communications and Internet access, as well as public transportation.
She mentioned that the complete effects of the attacks on the energy infrastructure would only be evident the following winter, as Ukraine's diminished energy capacity would result in many people being left without access to heating and other essential services for their survival.
