Germany commits another €1 billion to overcome consequences of Russian-caused global food crisis
The Russian war against Ukraine is affecting other countries, and Germany, as one of the main international donors, is increasing its share of humanitarian aid.
This was announced by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock during a discussion in the Bundestag, Ukrinform publishing writes.
"We are allocating an additional billion euros in this budget to help mitigate the effects of the global food crisis," the foreign minister said.
She recalled that over the past ten years, Germany has increased its contribution to humanitarian assistance programs more than twenty times. In 2023, this funding item will amount to 2.7 billion euros.
Baerbock also noted that she does not oppose diplomacy and military involvement. "There are times in life when just wanting this war to end is not enough. Rather, there are times when you have to decide which side you are on: justice or injustice, the attacker or the victim," the official said.
According to her, fortunately, the Democratic parties of Germany after February 24 made a joint decision: to be on the side of Ukraine and Ukrainians. Baerbock thanked the people of Germany, who also feel the consequences of the war, in particular, due to rising prices, but are ready to continue to stand on the side of Ukraine.
"We will not allow the success of the hunger and freezing strategy pursued by Russia," the politician stressed.
On Wednesday, the Bundestag considered the draft budget in the second reading. The head of the German government, as well as the ministers of Foreign Affairs and defense, spoke in this regard.
