EU signs first 8 agreements on joint shell procurement for Ukraine
On Tuesday, September 5, the European Defense Agency signed eight framework contracts with industry to jointly buy 155-mm ammunition for Ukraine
This information can be found on the EDA website.
Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union, stated, "We are taking another step forward in our three-track ammunition initiative. Member States can now pass orders within eight framework contracts. Time is of essence. Putin does not show any sign of letting up in his aggression against the Ukrainian people. This is why our military support for Ukraine’s defense must continue."
Joint procurement is considered the most efficient way to reduce costs through economies of scale and ensure compatibility, allowing member states to acquire ammunition based on their national requirements or to support Ukraine.
A total of 26 member states and Norway have signed the general agreement for the EDA project.
The purchased ammunition is intended for the most commonly used self-propelled howitzers that EU member states have provided to Ukraine, including the French Caesar, the Polish Krab, the German Panzerhaubitze 2000, and the Slovak Zuzana.
- Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur emphasized the need to double artillery ammunition production in Europe in the near future to assist Ukraine in its war effort and increase supplies to the continent.
