79-meter obelisk, last Soviet monument's element, is demolished in Riga
On August 25, a 79-meter obelisk, the last Soviet monument's element to the 'liberators', was dismantled in Victory Park in Latvia's capital

As the portal notes, the obelisk fell at 4:43 p.m. Dismantling the ceiling took about seven hours, and the fall caused a rumble and a strong splash of water in the pool. Some observers greeted the fall of the obelisk with applause.
Preparatory work for the monument's demolition began on Monday, August 22. The surrounding area was cordoned off, and the authorities urged not to come to the place of work. The police monitored public order.
Demolition of all elements of the Soviet memorial ensemble took three days. On Tuesday, a group of sculptures depicting Soviet soldiers was demolished, on Wednesday - a sculpture embodying the image of Nika.
