Ukraine’s defeat may prove to be strategic catastrophe for West - Russian opposition politician
Russian opposition politician Mark Feygin is convinced that if Europe wants to defend itself from the threat in the east, these countries will not be able to resist Russia without Ukraine
He shared his opinions on Espreso TV.
"Loss of Ukraine will be a strategic disaster for the West. It is the largest country in Eastern Europe, with a population of 40 million before the war. Now, it may be 25 million. But still, this cannot just be given up. It is the only geopolitical buffer separating Europe from Russia. Without it, Europe will remain defenseless against the eastern threat. If Ukraine is absorbed and Belarus is already effectively occupied, then the three largest East Slavic nations will be under Moscow's control. This will pose a serious threat to the Baltic States, Poland, and other countries. Therefore, Ukraine doesn't need to invent anything. If the West doesn't understand that Ukraine's existence is a matter of its own security, no arguments will help. If Ukraine is lost, the threat will come directly to them," explained Feygin.
The political scientist noted that Europe is indeed starting to prepare for confrontation with Russia. However, in his opinion, increased defense spending and changes to legislation will not help Europe defend itself against Russia if Ukraine suffers defeat in the war.
"In Europe, they already understand this. In the U.S., less so, because they are across the ocean, they are an 'island.' But in Europe, it is increasingly being said that a war with Russia is possible in a year or two. They are already realizing the reality of a conflict with Moscow and are trying to prepare: changing legislation, returning from professional armies to conscription – this process is already underway in Germany, while in France it is still voluntary. Europe is increasing defense spending and military budgets. Previously, the minimum was 2% of GDP, but now they are talking about 5%. Although this is happening under pressure from Washington, not all countries can afford it, but the discussion is already taking place, and these norms are being considered to ensure Europe's defense capability. But unless there is a Ukraine as a redoubt against Moscow, all these efforts are in vain. If Europe wants to defend itself from the eastern threat, it cannot do so without Ukraine," he emphasized.
