Spanish army shows how it storms trenches based on Ukrainian military experience
The Spanish army is actively studying the combat experience of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in battles against Russian invaders, including training its units on storming enemy trenches
Such training has already been conducted by the Galicia Brigade, which Spain deployed as part of the NATO contingent in Slovakia, as well as the Bripac Parachute Brigade, Defense Express reports.
Spanish military forces are first attempting to rethink the overall current situation on the Russian-Ukrainian front, which they believe is characterized by "battle lines fluctuating within a few kilometers and a positional stalemate, except for the Kursk Bulge."
Apparently, they had been preparing for maneuver warfare, where there is no clear front line and advances could reach several dozen kilometers per day.
In turn, this process of rethinking is exactly what the format of the Spanish military training focuses on, as seen in the video. Initially, it shows Spanish soldiers simply practicing the mechanics of storming and clearing trenches. However, the training does not include drones, armored vehicles, or other ground equipment.
Defense Express highlights an important point here. At first glance, training sessions where personnel only practice their actions without using relevant equipment or light and sound effects may seem overly mechanical and unconvincing.
However, this is precisely why the focus is on rethinking. It appears that Spanish forces are first trying to accept the idea that instead of maneuver and expeditionary operations, they, as NATO participants, need to prepare for combat in a "positional stalemate" similar to World War I.
According to The Military Balance 2024, as of early last year, the Spanish Army had 71,900 personnel, organized into one army corps and two divisions. They had 219 tanks, up to 1,000 various armored vehicles, and 1,500 artillery systems of different types.
