Zelenskyy on Russia's nuclear, energy blackmail: "This summer may become one of the most tragic in Europe's history"
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Ukraine's diplomats are working with their partners, the UN, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the details of a mission to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (NPP)
Zelenskyy said this in a video message on the evening of August 19, Espreso.TV reports.
"With this mission, the restoration of full security at the Zaporizhzhia NPP and Energodar can begin. And I am grateful to everyone who joined this work and initiative. If Russian blackmail with radiation continues, then this summer may become one of the most tragic in Europe's history. Because not a single instruction at any nuclear power plant in the world provides for the procedure in case some terrorist state turns the nuclear power plant into a target", Zelenskyy said.
The President also called on European countries to prepare to abandon Russian energy sources for the sake of independence, noting that Russia needs the Nord Stream and Nord Stream-2 gas pipelines only to destabilize Europe.
"Of course, today it is worth paying attention to another aspect of Russian blackmail in the field of energy. Gas supplies to Germany through the Nord Stream 1 are again being limited, and again absurd statements are being made that it is possible to compensate for something through Nord Stream 2. These "flows" are needed by Russia only to supply problems to Europe, not to help someone there with gas. The longer the terrorist state remains on the European and world energy market, the longer it will not be stable. And the sooner everyone in Europe prepares their energy systems to exist without any supply of energy carriers from Russia, the sooner they will be able to calmly survive any winter", Zelenskyy emphasized.
