Unlimited words of support and limited military assistance
Last year, I was more optimistic.
I thought that the White House would actively get behind Ukraine in the spring and summer of 2024 to help it win some kind of landmark victory and ride the wave of success to the polls.
Today, it's clear the White House follows an opposite tactic—no drastic moves against Russia to avoid premature escalation. A slight rise in gas prices could mean saying goodbye to the Oval Office!
But it was not Jake Sullivan alone who was to blame. Ordinary Americans, Democratic voters, who reacted in a very unexpected way to another war in Israel, made a significant contribution. So the Biden administration likely decided not to risk intensifying the confrontation with Russia.
What does this mean? It means that until the November elections, we will continue to receive unlimited words of support and limited military assistance. And only after the vote, no matter how it ends, changes are possible. And I can't tell whether it will be for the better or worse.
However, from a historical perspective, I still remain optimistic. The USSR was much stronger than Afghanistan, but it lost the war and disappeared from the world map. Russia will follow suit.
