Russia reacts to Trump's U.S. election victory
Russia's Foreign Ministry has stated that it would cooperate with the new U.S. administration, “firmly defending its national interests." The ministry also added that Moscow "has no illusions" about Donald Trump
According to Interfax, the ministry's statement reads, "Russia will work with the new U.S. administration once it takes office, prioritizing the defense of Russia's national interests and focusing on achieving the objectives of the 'special military operation.' Our stance remains unchanged and is well known in Washington."
The statement further noted that Moscow "has no illusions about the newly elected American president, who is well known in Russia."
According to Russian officials, Donald Trump's victory "reflects American dissatisfaction with both the results of Joe Biden's administration and the Democratic Party's election platform," and the election results "do not change the deep political divide in the United States."
The Russian Foreign Ministry statement goes on to say, "The political elite in the U.S., regardless of party affiliation, adheres to an anti-Russian stance and a policy of 'containing Moscow.' This line is not swayed by the fluctuations of the U.S. political climate, whether it's 'America First' as advocated by Trump and his supporters, or the 'rules-based international order' that Democrats are fixated on."
