Hungary opposes NATO becoming an "anti-China" bloc - minister Szijjártó
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that his country does not want NATO to become an "anti-China" bloc
Reuters reported the information.
Szijjártó emphasized that he considers NATO a defensive alliance and believes it cannot be turned into an "anti-China" bloc.
Reuters notes that China is an important trade and investment partner of the EU, but after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, other EU members are seeking to become less dependent on Beijing.
The news agency also adds that the Hungarian foreign minister said on the sidelines of the Washington NATO summit that Ukraine's accession to the Alliance would allegedly weaken its unity.
"Ukraine's admission wouldn't strengthen but weaken the unity's alliance, as there are completely different viewpoints on their membership. Ukraine's NATO membership would not strengthen the alliance's defence character as well because, in practice, it would create a risk of open conflict between Russia and NATO," Szijjártó said.
- On May 24, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that his country is working to "redefine" its NATO membership status to potentially refuse to deepen support for Ukraine.
