Ukraine’s MP explains why Russia will not be expelled from UN
Oleksiy Honcharenko, Member of Parliament of Ukraine, believes that it is impossible to deprive Russia of its seat and veto power in the UN Security Council because of its nuclear weapons
He expressed this opinion on Espreso TV.
"We can and should raise the issue of the legitimacy of Russia's membership in the UN. However, let's be objective, this will not happen. Why do I say that we can and should? Because we always tell the truth – Russia is illegally in the UN, Russia is illegally in the Security Council. It should not be there," the Ukrainian MP emphasized.
According to him, there is a high probability that after this war, there will be changes, reform of the UN or perhaps even the creation of a new organization.
"And our task is to ensure that in that new organization, or after those changes and reforms, Russia would not have any veto or privileged place. We have to talk about this today. Because Russia, or what will come after it, I'm sure, one day it will disintegrate, that is, its successor, should not have any special places in the international security system. But now we need to be objective, we can call and talk about it, but no one will expel Russia from the UN Security Council. In fact, this is not about law, not about legal issues, but about a very simple thing – nuclear weapons," said Oleksiy Honcharenko.
- Last year, Ukraine initiated the process of expelling Russia from the Security Council and the UN as a whole.
- On September 29, the former head of the Constitutional Court of Lithuania said that Russia could be expelled from the UN de facto by refusing to recognize the powers of its representatives. Such a precedent was set by South Africa
