Ukrainians may have up to 5 million weapons, almost all of them registered - Interior Ministry
Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko said that as of now, Ukrainian citizens may have from one to five million weapons at their disposal
He said this at a meeting of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities under the President of Ukraine, Ukrinform reports.
"Today we talked about how many weapons our citizens may have. From one million to five. But a million is still a lot," Klymenko said.
In addition, he said, Ukrainians also have a lot of grenades. The Interior Minister emphasized that everything should be done to ensure that these weapons and ammunition are put into storage so as not to endanger other citizens.
Klymenko emphasized that as of today, almost all weapons issued to citizens are accounted for, but he noted that citizens are currently holding a certain number of trophy weapons illegally.
"But we realize that citizens should have it in their hands because there is a war going on. Two weeks ago, a law was passed in the first reading that defines what we will do with trophy weapons. After this law is voted on in the second reading, every citizen who has this weapon must bring it to the police and register it," the minister explained.
The Interior Minister noted that after that, citizens will be able to keep these weapons and ammunition until the end of martial law. In 90 days after the end of martial law, every citizen must bring these weapons to the police and either hand them over or convert them into a permitted type of weapon, etc.
Klymenko emphasized that the issue is the culture of using weapons owned by Ukrainian citizens.
"As soon as we can cultivate this culture in people, then we can talk about taking the next step in terms of gun ownership. At the same time, we should not forget about the large number of mental disorders among these people who will come from the frontline, and we will be responsible, the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the first place, for this work," the minister added.
