Ukraine lost only 5 out of 71 Leopard 2 tanks during counteroffensive, crews survived – media
During the counteroffensive, Ukraine has lost five of its 71 Leopard 2 tanks. About ten more are damaged and need to be repaired
This is reported by the American Forbes, whose data coincides with the information of the OSINT portal Oryx.
Two of the destroyed tanks are Leopard 2A4 (Ukraine received 50 vehicles), and three are Leopard 2A6 (partners handed over 21 vehicles).
Forbes notes that every crew member of the five destroyed tanks (i.e. 20 soldiers) managed to escape before the tank burned or exploded.
For the crew's survival, it is important that the Leopard 2 has special turret compartments for 120mm ammunition, which explode outwards upon impact. While a direct hit on a T-72 is likely to kill everyone inside, as the ammunition is located under the turrets.
In addition, damaged German tanks can be repaired. They are restored in Poland and Germany and then returned to the front. This can happen many times.
For the first time, the Russians destroyed a Leopard 2A4 near Novopokrovka in Zaporizhzhia region. The location was identified by the Oryx team. The occupying Russian forces destroyed the second Leopard 2A4 south of Mala Tokmachka. Tanks were also destroyed near Robotyne.
On 24 July, Berlin announced that Polish partners would be able to repair Leopard 2A4 tanks damaged at the frontline in Ukraine.
In mid-June, Russian propagandists spread information about the destruction of at least seven Western-supplied Leopard tanks and more than 100 armored combat vehicles.
However, this information was not confirmed. It was denied by both our partners and the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
