Sweden's mobile air defense: potential aid for Ukraine
The innovative air defense solution presented by the combination of Saab's RBS 70 and a US armored vehicle could find practical application in Ukraine
Defense Express writes about this.
Amid lessons from Ukraine's war, Western manufacturers are focusing on mobile air defense for countering aerial threats. Saab, the Swedish company, is set to unveil its version at the DSEI 2023 exhibition in September.
Saab has integrated its RBS 70 with an American JLTV armored car, equipped with Saab's Barracuda camouflage. This camouflage conceals the vehicle and allows quick reorientation against airborne threats when needed.
For countering such threats, Saab has opted for the RBS 70 NG, a portable anti-aircraft missile system. This system boasts a range exceeding 9 km, an altitude reach of up to 5 km, rapid 45-second deployment, and missiles clocking a top speed of Mach 2.
Notably, Ukrainian Defense Forces have already employed the RBS 70 system, downing a Russian Ka-52 helicopter recently. Ukraine had requested these systems over a year ago, with deliveries taking place between March and April this year. This innovation could significantly enhance Ukraine's air defense capabilities.
