South Korea’s president vows to boost non-lethal military aid for Ukraine
South Korea’s President, Yoon Suk Yeol, has pledged to increase humanitarian and non-lethal military assistance to Ukraine
He announced this after a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.
"I hope that today's talks and visit will open a new chapter in our relations. Today we have launched an initiative to help Ukraine in the areas of military and humanitarian support and post-war reconstruction," Yoon said.
According to the South Korean president, he and Zelenskyy believe that the most important thing for Ukraine now is to ensure its security and victory.
"We have read the Peace Formula and we really believe that it should be implemented, especially since Korea is trying to mediate at peace summits and meetings of countries belonging to the so-called Global South," Yoon said.
In addition, he reminded that the Republic of Korea has been providing military assistance to Ukraine, including bulletproof vests, helmets and other necessary ammunition last year.
"We hope that this year the level of our assistance will be much higher," the South Korea’s leader said.
Seoul "will expand the scale of supplies from last year, when we provided materials such as helmets and bullet-proof vests", he said, adding that humanitarian aid would be increased to $150 million in 2023 from $100 million last year.
