Scholz's statement about war in Ukraine becomes "word of the year" in Germany

“This word, which is not new and means the beginning of the Christian era, but in a more general sense also any transition to a new era, was actively used in the second sense by Chancellor Scholz. The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 became “a turning point in the history of our continent.” In the same context, Federal President Steinmeier spoke of an “epochal turning point,” the German Language Society explained. 

According to the jury, the second place was taken by the phrase Krieg im Frieden - "war for peace".

“Also, the Russian-Ukrainian war refers to the seemingly absurd expression "war for peace". For Moscow propaganda, this is a special military operation, and for many, especially in NATO, it is simply a war of aggression. Even in political parties with pacifist traditions, the opinion about the need to provide armed support to Ukraine to protect its state integrity, and subsequently to achieve lasting peace in Eastern Europe, was widespread,” the society explained. 

The third place was taken by the phrase Gaspreis Bremse, which in translation means "gas price brake".
